Earlier this month, the Minister of Multicultural Affairs hosted a special event at the Victorian Parliament for the Indian diaspora, where many parliament members joined in a celebration of the community’s contributions and the richness of Victoria’s multicultural society. The event highlighted the vital role diversity plays in enriching Victoria’s social fabric, bringing together various communities to foster mutual respect and understanding. Representatives of the Dawoodi Bohra community were among those present, as the Victorian government, led by Premier Jacinta Allan, was commended for strengthening ties between India and Australia while addressing local community concerns.
“The Indian community is a vibrant and integral part of Victoria, and I am committed to ensuring that their needs are met with practical solutions,” Premier Allan said during the meeting. “It’s important that we continue to consult and work closely with all communities in Victoria to ensure that we’re addressing the real issues they face, from healthcare to education.”
The Dawoodi Bohra community has played an active role in promoting interfaith dialogue, social welfare, and cultural preservation, contributing significantly to Victoria's multicultural landscape. Their initiatives include organising annual interfaith forums that bring together leaders of different faiths to foster mutual understanding and respect, participating in environmental clean-up drives to support the local environment, and providing meals for the homeless as part of their global Project Rise initiative. These efforts have made the community a key player in promoting harmony and inclusivity in the state.
“We are honoured to be part of this celebration of cultural diversity, which underscores the values of unity, service, and mutual respect that our community holds dear. Through our various initiatives—whether it’s fostering interfaith dialogue, providing social support to those in need, preserving the natural environment, or ensuring the preservation of our rich cultural heritage—we aim to contribute positively to the multicultural fabric of Victoria,” said Mustafa Poonawala, a representative of the Dawoodi Bohra community in Melbourne, who was present at the celebration.
The discussions during the event also emphasised enhancing cultural exchange and women’s safety, reflecting the government’s commitment to fostering inclusivity and addressing the community's needs. The Dawoodi Bohras remain committed to maintaining their cultural values while working with Victorian leadership to build a more inclusive and harmonious society.
