In collaboration with Australian Red Cross Lifeblood, the Dawoodi Bohra community of Melbourne has organised a blood donation drive to boost medical preparedness at the outset of Christmas holidays.
Australia requires 1.7 million blood donations annually which is equivalent to three donations every minute. With demand especially critical during the holiday season, the community hopes the contribution can make a difference to save lives.
"The festive season is a time for giving, and we are proud to support Australian Red Cross Lifeblood and help those in need. Together, we can make a meaningful impact," said Huzaifa Bootwala, a community organiser.
Blood donations are vital for various medical treatments. Only 2% of all donations are used to treat trauma-related injuries like road accidents. The majority support everyday medical treatments, including cancer care, surgeries, and managing medical conditions such as anaemia.
The Dawoodi Bohras of Melbourne have made 37 blood donations over two drives this year. According to Australian Red Cross Lifeblood, each donation can save up to three lives. This is because a single donation is typically separated into three components—red cells, plasma, and platelets—each of which can be used to treat different patients with various medical conditions. This entails that the community's efforts have potentially saved up to 111 lives in 2024—a remarkable achievement.

Michelle from Australian Red Cross Lifeblood expressed her gratitude to the Dawoodi Bohras, saying: “Thank you for your unwavering support for our cause, especially as we’re heading towards the holiday season. Every drop helps those in need, and we’re very fortunate to have you all as members of our community."
The Dawoodi Bohras of Melbourne are proud to play their part in this vital cause, and embody the spirit of giving and supporting the broader community.
