As the world marks the United Nations’ International Day of Education on 24 January, we reflect on the transformative power of learning and its role in shaping the future. This year’s theme, “AI and education: Preserving human agency in a world of automation,” emphasises the importance of equipping individuals with the skills to navigate a rapidly changing world. To celebrate this day, we spoke with Fatema Bharmal, a teacher from the Auckland Dawoodi Bohra community, who shared her experiences and insights on the value of education and its ability to create meaningful change.
Fatema works at St. Dominic’s Catholic Primary School in Auckland, teaching 7 and 8 year-olds and serving as the Teacher Librarian, where she promotes a reading culture across the school.
Fatema’s passion for teaching began with a simple yet profound desire to make a difference. "The most rewarding aspect of teaching is building relationships and encouraging students to think critically, explore ideas, and develop a lifelong love of learning," she said. To engage her students, Fatema employs a variety of innovative methods, including collaborative problem-solving, inquiry-based learning, hands-on activities, and the integration of arts, drama, and technology. She emphasises the importance of constructive feedback, allowing students to take ownership of their learning journey. "Continuously refining teaching tools to meet the needs of students is vital," she notes.
Fatema recalled a particularly inspiring story of a student who struggled with emotional and academic challenges. By building trust and providing consistent support, she helped the student develop strategies to manage his emotions and improve his behaviour. Over time, his academic performance flourished. Years later, she met him again—this time as a confident university student—a moment that underscored the profound impact of education.
Inclusivity, diversity, and cultural awareness are integral to Fatema’s teaching practices. She works hard to create an inclusive environment that celebrates differences, encourages critical thinking, and adapts to various learning styles. She also highlights the importance of home-school partnerships, which she believes are key to enhancing student engagement and success.
Fatema reflects on the Dawoodi Bohra community’s emphasis on education, inspired by the guidance of the leader, His Holiness Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin. "Faith-based learning provides strong values, grounding students in their growth and actions," she explains. The Dawoodi Bohra community’s commitment to higher education for both men and women has produced successful entrepreneurs and skilled professionals, creating a ripple effect that promotes lifelong learning.
For young people, Fatema emphasises the importance of education in building independence, resilience, and self-confidence. "Education helps shape better futures by equipping individuals with the tools to navigate challenges and seize opportunities," she says.
To those considering a career in teaching, her advice is: "Teach with purpose. If you’re passionate about learning and enjoy working with people, this path offers endless opportunities for personal and professional growth."
Reflecting on the theme of this year’s International Day of Education, Fatema highlights how education can empower individuals to adapt to and shape the future of AI. She believes that education fosters problem-solving, creativity, and emotional intelligence, ensuring that humanity remains at the forefront of technological advancement. "By teaching ethical awareness and collaboration, we can prepare people to use AI responsibly while preserving human agency," she adds.
